Secular Homeschool Curriculum Showcase
June is a great month to plan your secular homeschool curriculum for Fall and Winter- it’s also an awesome time to reflect on what you’ve used that you loved, what didn’t work and what you never even got around to trying!
Back in November 2024, I started an online community called the Secular Witchy Homeschool Collective- a safe space for all things Secular Witchy Homeschool related. The community has grown in magical ways and as I started to go through our successes and failures from Fall-Spring of 2024-25, I thought it would be fun to share it in the group, and see what was working for others too!
Over on ANOTHER social platform, my personal fave, my friend Erica Johns runs the “TikTok Homeschool Conference”. Every month has a different theme and June happened to be Curriculum Show & Tell- because, again, June is an excellent time for this, really.
The only hitch is the TTHSC is for all homeschoolers, and filtering out the secular, progressive, inclusive resources can take some work- so here we are- back to the FB group, for the first annual Secular Witchy Homeschool Collective Curriculum Showcase featuring some of my favorite resources of all time, and an opportunity to learn about some new resources too!
Kumon has a massive catalog with extensive early childhood and grade school series, as well as a number of popular middle school titles. We started using these books many years ago, and in the preschool and K-2nd years they were really the only structured “curriculum” my kids worked with (we were VERY play-based in early childhood). More recently, we’ve been using the middle school books that are awesome for reinforcing math fundamentals. While most of their workbooks focus on a single subject, they also have an “Ace the Grade series” that offers an all-in-one multi-subject approach. You can also find Educator resources are available on their website HERE. It’s no surprise to me that they have sold over 30 million workbooks, worldwide!
Kumon is sponsoring the SWHC Curriculum Showcase this year and offering a fabulous discount code to group members- so make sure you head over to the group and check that out!
My oldest child is finishing middle school this week, as I write this, and when I asked them how they feel about high school next year, their answer was “ready!” and I ABSOLUTELY owe all those years of Kumon books some BIG THANKS for that answer, no doubt!
Join us in the FB community for more on Kumon and MANY other great resources (like one of my brand new favorites for middle and high school level social studies, People Are Culture). The 8k current group members are also all sharing their favorites too! I’m excited to find some new ideas and inspiration for next year!
I will be sharing some of our personal favorites from this school year but also some of our ALL time FAVES as well!
One of those all-time favorites is Kumon, we’ve using the Kumon workbooks, primarily in math but in other subjects as well, for about TEN YEARS now!!
The Kumon method is a step-by-step approach that builds difficulty gradually and encourages students to progress at their own pace- I know plenty of traditional school families who love these work books to supplement and “bridge” through summer from one grade to the next, and we have loved them since the preschool years for core knowledge and foundational skill building.
